  • Do I have to be admitted before receiving an Automatic Academic Scholarship?

Yes. You must be academically admitted to Indiana University Bloomington before being considered for Automatic Academic Scholarships.

  • Do I need to apply by a certain date to be considered for Automatic Academic Scholarships?

Yes.  All of your completed application materials for admission must be submitted online or postmarked by the November 1 deadline to receive consideration for Automatic Academic Scholarships.  If you submit application materials later than November 1, you will not be eligible for Automatic Academic Scholarships.

  • How will I be notified if I have earned an Automatic Academic Scholarship?
You will be notified of an Automatic Academic Scholarship in your letter of admission from IU.  If you earn a new, or higher level, Automatic Academic Scholarship after admission (based on new test scores), you will receive a separate letter officially notifying you of that scholarship.
  • Which SAT and ACT scores are considered for Automatic Academic Scholarships?
The SAT score considered is based on the Critical Reading and Math sections. The ACT score considered is the combined highest composite score - the average of the highest scores from each subtest.
  • I plan on applying for admission to the Jacobs School of Music for fall 2012.  Will I be considered for an Automatic Academic Scholarship?

If you apply for admission to the Jacobs School of Music, you will not be eligible for Automatic Academic Scholarship consideration.  The Jacobs School of Music will be awarding scholarships to admitted students based on a combinaton of academic achievement and talent as demonstrated in the audition or interview.
  • Is it beneficial for me to take the SAT or ACT more than once?
Yes, you are encouraged to retake the SAT or ACT as often scores will increase. IU will utilize the highest critical reading score and the highest math score combined for the SAT score, and the combined highest composite score from the ACT, for both admission and scholarship consideration.
  • If I retake the SAT or ACT and my scores increase, can I be reconsidered for Automatic Academic Scholarships?
Yes.  If you meet the November 1 deadline, you may submit updated SAT or ACT scores by January 15, 2012 for reconsideration of Automatic Academic Scholarships.  If you do not submit all application materials in time for the November 1 deadline, you will not be eligible for new awards or reconsideration.
  • Where should I send new SAT or ACT scores for reconsideration?
All materials related to your application for admission should be sent to the Office of Admissions. No academic information should be sent directly to the Office of Scholarships.
  • Is there a separate application for Automatic Academic Scholarships?
No.  All non-music majors who submit a complete application for admission to Indiana University by November 1 will be considered for Automatic Academic Scholarships.  Students submitting the Jacobs School of Music application for admission are not eligible for Automatic Academic Scholarship consideration.
  • Which GPA is used for Automatic Academic Scholarships?
When students apply for admission to IU, whichever cumulative GPA on the student’s transcript is higher (weighted or unweighted) will be utilized for admission and scholarship consideration.
  • Can I submit the admission applications for both Indiana University and the Jacobs School of Music?
No, you must apply to either Indiana University or the Jacobs School of Music.  Applying for admission to both is not a possibility.
  • Can I still be considered for the Selective Scholarship Application even though I applied to the Jacobs School of Music?
Yes.  Though you will not be considered for Automatic Academic Scholarships as a Jacobs School of Music applicant, you will still be considered for Selective Scholarship Application eligibilty if you submit a complete application for admission by November 1.
  • How are students from high schools that do not provide a cumulative GPA considered for Automatic Academic Scholarships?  What about home schooled students?
Students attending high schools that don’t provide a cumulative GPA and home schooled students will be reviewed individually.  In these cases, SAT or ACT score and overall academic information will be weighted more heavily.
  • What if my high school GPA is not on a 4.0 grading scale?
If your high school is not on a 4.0 grading scale, and a conversion for a 4.0 scale is not provided by the high school counselor on the Counselor Signature Form, the Office of Admissions will convert your GPA to its equivalent on a 4.0 scale.
  • Do you recalculate GPA to consider core classes only?
No. IU does not recalculate GPAs for admission or scholarship purposes and utilizes the assessment provided by the high school on the transcript.
  • Can my 7th semester GPA be used to be reconsidered for Automatic Academic Scholarships?
No. The GPA utilized for Automatic Academic Scholarship consideration is the initial one submitted with your complete application for admission to IU. The deadline for Automatic Academic Scholarship consideration is November 1.
  • If I think my GPA will go up enough at the end of the 7th semester, should I wait to apply for admission until that time?
No.  The deadline for Automatic Academic Scholarship consideration is November 1.  If you submit a complete application after that date, you will not be considered.

  • What if I meet one criterion and not the other?
Scholarships at IU are competitive. You must meet all specified criteria in order to receive that level of Automatic Academic Scholarship.
  • What if I am off on one (or both) of the criteria by only 10 points or .01 GPA?
Scholarships at IU are competitive. You must meet all specified criteria in order to receive that level of Automatic Academic Scholarship. There is no flexibility on meeting the criteria.
  • Can I earn more than one Automatic Academic Scholarship?
You may only receive one of the following scholarships: IU Excellence, IU Distinction or IU Prestige. The scholarship received will be based on a student’s residency and academic criteria at the time of admission. The only instance in which you could earn more than one Automatic Academic Scholarship is if you are an Indiana resident receiving the Valedictorian Award.
  • Can Automatic Academic Scholarships be combined with other scholarships?
Yes, these scholarships can be combined with other scholarships until the full cost of attendance has been reached. However, if a student receives a full scholarship (ex. Wells, Druck, Cox Research, etc.) those scholarships supersede all other awards.
  • When will Automatic Academic Scholarship awarding be discontinued?

The deadline for Automatic Academic Scholarship consideration is November 1.  Students who submit application materials after November 1 will not be considered.

  • Are international students considered for Automatic Academic Scholarships?
Yes. International students are eligible for: IU Distinction and IU Prestige. Note: If an international student is an Indiana resident, they could also receive the Valedictorian Award.
  • As an undocumented student, am I eligible to receive academic scholarships from Indiana University?
Indiana University is unable to offer scholarship funding to undocumented students.
  • Are transfer students considered for Automatic Academic Scholarships?
Unfortunately, only incoming freshmen are eligible for Automatic Academic Scholarships. However, transfer students that are Indiana residents are eligible to apply for the Phi Theta Kappa Transfer Scholarship.
  • Can a student earn an Automatic Academic Scholarship with a GED instead of a high school diploma?
Yes. Students who have earned GEDs will be reviewed individually. In these cases, SAT or ACT score, GED score, and overall academic information will be weighted more heavily.
  • Will students who graduate early (December) from high school and then start the following spring semester (a few weeks later) be considered for Automatic Academic Scholarships?
Yes. However, students in this scenario are not automatically considered by our scholarship system due to the timing, and should contact the Office of Scholarships, as these cases will be individually reviewed. Note: Students still receive only 8 semesters of their scholarship, regardless of their start date.
  • I am deferring my admission to IU – can I defer my Automatic Academic Scholarship as well?
Yes. If a student defers their offer of admission for up to one year (by formally requesting their deferral through the Office of Admissions) and it is approved, they can keep their Automatic Academic Scholarship when they enroll as a freshman. They will maintain the scholarship offered to them at the time of their admission to IU and will not be re-reviewed for their new year of enrollment.
