Wise Company Scholarship Contest

Description of the scholarship:

It seems that the aging U.S. power grid has been underestimated and does not receive much attention, as we are very used to taking the electricity in our homes for granted. So much so, that we don’t even think about what will happen if the lights go out, let alone prepare for it! There have been numerous events of power failure in the past that are noteworthy and are a cause for concern. August 14, 2003, marked one of the largest blackouts in U.S. history when many trees came down on the power lines in Ohio. Roughly 50 million people were affected because of this. This particular instance in Ohio seems far from a naturally recurring event, but it is just one of many instances that point out the outdated electric infrastructure of the U.S. power grid. Materials from the Word War II era are still currently in use – increasing the number of outages in the country year over year. The U.S. is also recognized for having the most blackouts compared to any other developed nation, as our outages average more than an hour now – directly affecting our economy.

Trucking Unltd Computer Science Scholarship

Description of the scholarship:

Our website TruckDrivingJobs.com was born out of technology. Prior to establishing Trucking Unltd, one of our co-founders was a computer science major at the University of Southern California. Being a private school, the cost of attendance was far too much for him to afford. Due to his financial circumstances, the university itself awarded him a grant to cover 50% of his tuition. For the remainder, his only alternative seemed to be high-interest loans, until he found out about scholarships. After he resourced scholarships designed specifically for Computer Science majors, he was given several awards; enough to cover his entire tuition. Trucking Unltd would possibly not exist if he hadn't been able to afford school, but thanks to generous scholarships, we are here today and help hundreds of truck drivers find jobs each and every month. It is for this reason that we offer a $500 annual scholarship to help similar students in need. Trucking Unltd is offering a $500 scholarship to undergraduates to help cover a portion of their college expenses. This scholarship is available to all students currently enrolled at least half-time pursuing a B.S. degree.

Fox Valley Foodie Blogging Scholarship

Description of the scholarship:

Ever since I was a child I knew what I wanted to do when I grew up: Blog? No, bloggers in the early 1990’s were called “little sisters” and their websites were “diaries”. I wanted to work in politics!

Well, long story short, I spent a lot of money, got a degree in political science, worked in politics for a few years and decided life would be a lot more fun if I could sit at home in my pajamas every day, taking pictures of stretchy melted cheese. So I threw some magic pixie dust over my shoulder (truth be told, it was just Himalayan Sea Salt) and BAM, I became a successful food blogger.

To celebrate waking up to do what I love each morning, I’ve decided to start the FoxValleyFoodie.com Blogging Scholarship and award $500 to a deserving student blogger. Few people appreciate the amount of behind the scenes effort required to make a website successful, which is why I couldn’t be more excited to support those with the determination to blaze their own trail in this non-traditional field.
