When Devin Jones signed on to compete in Little 50, he didn’t know what he was getting himself into, but he knew he wanted to be a part of one of the biggest traditions at IU.
Little 50 is a customary part of Little 500 week: a running race in which teams compete to be first to finish 50 laps around a track.
“It’s really cool that even as a sophomore at IU, I could participate in Little 500 week,” Devin said. “It’s something I can really look back on and be glad I did years later.” Devin participated in Little 50 with his chemistry fraternity, Alpha Chi Sigma. When the idea was proposed, he immediately jumped on the opportunity.
He remembers clearly that it was a chilly April day, but “perfect running weather.” Devin was surprised by the amount of people who showed up to support him and his team at the Billy Hays Track.
“I knew there was an organic chemistry test that day, so I wasn’t sure if anyone would even be there to see us run, but everyone came after to cheer for us with signs. I was so surprised and proud,” Devin said. They finished 17 out of 19 teams, and the experience was so great, he plans on doing it again this year with the same team.
