Q&A

Why do you belong at IU?

I belong at IU because, while my academics are my top priority and the main reason I'm here, I also realize that college offers many more opportunities to experience outside of academia. IU has been a great school for both academics and extracurricular activities. Not only have I been able to receive a great education at this university, I have also been able to participate in many volunteer activities, participate in a summer research program at IU medical school, hear from several well-known speakers, and participate in the university's great intramural sports program. There aren't many dull moments at IU, and that's the way I like it.

What do you like most about your major or scholarship program?

The thing I like most about my main scholarship program, Hudson & Holland, is that they focus on producing well-rounded students. Outside of making sure students in the program maintain good grades, the program also emphasizes attending professional/graduate school, actively participating in community service, and the importance of diversity. Being part of Hudson & Holland has undoubtedly made my experience at IU more productive and enjoyable.

What is an interesting fact about you that most people would find surprising or unexpected?

Most people see me as a quiet, reserved person because I'm not what most would consider "talkative". So I think the fact that most people would find surprising about me is that I'm a very extroverted person. I like to have time to myself, but I prefer to be around my friends. I actually am very talkative with people whom I know well. I just tend to listen more if I don't know someone very well.

Where is your favorite spot on campus?

My favorite spot on campus is the gym at the HPER. I spend many hours (possibly an excessive amount) there playing basketball.

What is your favorite thing about Bloomington?

My favorite thing about Bloomington is that the community seems to be very open-minded about many issues. There are people here that hold many different beliefs, but everyone seems to get along relatively well.

Tell us about your family.

I was raised by a single mother, and I could go on for hours about what a great parent she has been and still is. She has worked hard every day to support the two of us, and she always made me her top priority regardless of how tired or busy she was. My best characteristics are a direct result of her great parenting. Although it was just she and I in the house, all my other family members also have been, and still are, a vital component to my life.

What is the best college experience you have had so far?

The best college experience I have had so far has been the opportunity to work with several mentoring programs offered on campus. I received a lot of help from others while trying to get into college, and thereafter during my transition into college, so I have enjoyed the opportunity to do the same for others because I know how important it is.

What do you want to do after you graduate?

After I graduate I will be attending medical school. I currently plan on pursuing a career as an orthopedic surgeon or trauma surgeon.

What music are you currently listening to?

Right now I mainly listen to Wale, Kid Cudi, and Wiz Khalifa.

What is your advice to students interested in Indiana University?

Students interested in Indiana University should definitely visit the campus and meet with current students at the university. I wasn't sure about coming to IU initially, but after talking with students already attending the university I was able to get a general idea of what life would be like as an IU student. Pretty much everything they talked about has been accurate thus far!
