The Cox Legacy

The Cox Legacy provides for hard-working Indiana residents who are academically strong and have demonstrated financial need.  Students earning a Cox Scholarship their freshman year earn a scholarship that provides for 75% of the total cost of attendance for three years (six semesters) of undergraduate study on the Bloomington campus of Indiana University. All Cox Scholars must have demonstrated financial need, maintain strong academics, and maintain employment.

Cox Access Scholars 

Cox Access Scholarships enable suitably qualified returning adult learners, with a cumulative gap of five years or more in their education, to be full-time students and part-time employees.  

Cox Scholarships for Current Students

The Cox Scholarship for Current Students rewards current IU Bloomington students who will be a sophomore, junior, or senior in the fall semester who have been working while taking classes full time. 

To be eligible for a Cox Access Scholarship or Cox Scholarship for Current Students, a student must be:

  • classified as an Indiana Resident.
  • pursuing his or her first baccalaureate degree at IU Bloomington.
  • earning a 3.0 cumulative grade point average or higher (4.0 scale).a current or returning IU Bloomington student who has filed or will file Free Application for Federal Student Aid form (FAFSA) by March 10th for the upcoming academic year.
  • demonstrating a commitment to funding your education by earning through employment at least 25 percent of the total cost of attendance as determined by the Office of Student Financial Assistance.
  • Please note: NCAA Varsity athletes are not eligible for the Cox Scholarship. 

Applying for a Cox Scholarship:

  • Apply online through OneStart by March 10, 2011.  (Under the Financial section, select the IU Foundation Application.)
  • Follow the instructions below and submit your completed supplemental materials to:

All documents must be in the same envelope and postmarked by March 10, 2011.

1.  Resumé
This document must include your Student ID number and should include the following: all activities, volunteer involvement, awards and honors, hobbies and interests.  In addition, include details of your work history (paid and volunteer).

2.  Two Letters of Recommendation
One letter must be an academic reference from an IU Bloomington faculty member.  The other letter must be an employment reference from a current or former employer.  Letters should be placed in a sealed envelope, addressed to the "Cox Scholars Selection Committee," and included with all other application materials.  They may not be e-mailed or sent as a separate mailing.

3.  Personal Statement
Please include a personal statement of no more than 250 words about why you should be selected as a Cox Scholar.

4.  Enclose a copy of all documentation for wages earned during the previous year (2011)
In order to confirm that the applicant meets the criteria with regard to employment, the Office of Scholarships requests documentation of earnings in the form of an applicant's W-2 form, spreadsheets outlining earnings, and other types of documentation.
